Harriete Estel Berman makes jewelry from the discards of our consumer society recycled "tin" containers and post consumer plastic. In this dramatic and colorful jewelry, the colors, the patterns, and the words taken from post consumer materials symbolize our personal search for identity in our material culture. Bar codes and brand name material from post-consumer tin containers recycle our unconscious consumption of advertising, marketing, and possession as identification. The materials are not as precious as gold or silver but in many ways reflect more accurately the values of our society.

Every piece of jewelry is one-of-a-kind from post-consumer packaging, tin cans, and post-consumer plastic waste from take out trays to shampoo bottles. There are no multiples.

Valrhona Chocolate Flower Pin

This when chocolate is your first love. This stunning flower pin has a high contrast front made from black, red and blue tins with a touch of gold, metallic tin. The back features vintage images from a cocoa tin printed with a tea cup. The teacup is a reference to a signature group of my work called “Consuming Conversation.”

Look closely at the close up of the back. In this close up image is my maker’s mark, a domestic iron with a electric cord and plus (as a tribute to women’s work.)

Made from recycled post-consumer tin, this piece isn’t just a fashion statement but also a statement on sustainability.

A sturdy commercial pin stem is concealed on the back.
Purchases can be my mail or at my studio.
