Bermaid Fruit Crate Label features Harriete’s Signature: “Bermaid.” A play on words and the identity of the artist, Bermaid references Harriete’s last name, Berman, and alters it to be more aligned with her feminism and craftsmanship. “Berman” ends with “man,” so “man” is replaced with “maid,” hinting at Harriete’s identity as a woman and suggesting that the work is made by hand.
