Window of Isolation, Cage of My Own Construction
Window of Isolation, Cage of My Own Construction narrates the isolation often experienced as a mother spending time alone taking care of two children at home. As a mother I recall entire days of isolation, and I was busy but alone. 30 years after this piece’s construction, its concept echoes a reality similar to that brought on by COVID-19. Under state social distance regulations, everyone was forced to spend days in isolation and rescind from social activities, giving many individuals a taste of the daily reality often experienced during early motherhood. The box, this pedestal for womanhood, is really a cage. The isolating reality of early motherhood is yet another step required of women that can be hindering and limiting.
This isolation also reminds me of care takers for Alzheimer’s and memory loss patients that echo time in endless days of patience, reminded about the past, and concerned for the future.
