Fruit crate labelIt is from "The California Collection." These bracelets and the fruit label are part of a new series of work constructed from recycled tin cans, cut and riveted with layers of images and symbolism of California. The reuse of post consumer material reflects California as both the ultimate consumer culture and the leader in the recycling movement and green design.  Fruit crate label constructed from recycled tin cans, aluminum rivets, 10k gold rivets. Bermaid writing "floats" above label about 1/4".Dimensions of label: 9 1/4” H x 5 5/16” W x 1 3/4” D

Artist Statement
Artist StatementFruit crate labels were an early 20th century invention of California to create an identity for California fruits and vegetables. The labels themselves were printed in San Francisco where there was a highly competitive industry for lithographic printing of the labels. The labels also functioned as an identity for the products of either individuals farms or collectives of growers. California missions were often used as an iconographic image of California on the fruit crate labels as in this example below.

The fruit crate symbolically represents the historic fertility of California’s valleys bountiful with fruits and vegetables. Orchards once covered Silicon Valley, but it now blooms with inventions and enterprising ventures. The bracelets in Bermaid, Santa Rosa symbolize the innovative entrepreneurial products of Santa Rosa including Charles Schultz Peanuts cartoon, Santa Rosa Plums and Luther Burbank seeds. California exports ideas as well as products from its fertile valleys.
