Artist StatementFruit crate labels were an early 20th century invention of California to create an identity for California fruits and vegetables. The labels themselves were printed in San Francisco where there was a highly competitive industry for lithographic printing of the labels. The labels also functioned as an identity for the products of either individuals farms or collectives of growers. California missions were often used as an iconographic image of California on the fruit crate labels as in this example below.
The fruit crate symbolically represents the historic fertility of California’s valleys bountiful with fruits and vegetables. Orchards once covered Silicon Valley, but it now blooms with inventions and enterprising ventures. The bracelets in Bermaid, Santa Rosa symbolize the innovative entrepreneurial products of Santa Rosa including Charles Schultz Peanuts cartoon, Santa Rosa Plums and Luther Burbank seeds. California exports ideas as well as products from its fertile valleys.
